Patrick Camille Kennedy, after graduating from the Cheyenne Agency Boarding School, joined the U.S. Navy in October of 1954, and served until Sept. 19, 1958. He was assigned to the USS Skagit AKA 105 for 24 months and served two years overseas shore duty. He was then granted an honorable discharge from the Philippines.

He returned to South Dakota to work, marry and raise a family. Patrick died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the Fort Meade Veterans Hospital in Sturgis at the age of 68.

He was born Aug. 30, 1935, on the Rosebud Agency in South Dakota to Patrick and Clara (Gruett) Kennedy. He attended kindergarten and first grade in Rosebud and moved to the Cheyenne Agency in 1943. While in Cheyenne Agency he finished second through eighth grades. He attended the ninth grade at St. Francis Mission, and 10 through 12 at Cheyenne Agency Boarding School.

After returning from his navy service, Patrick was a bus driver for the BIA and was hired at the school kitchen in April of 1960 until July of 1964. During that time he met and married Wanda M. Carter in Pierre. Four children were born to them, DeeAnn, Clayton, Colin and Sioux Marie.
Pat then worked for the Indian Health Service until Oct. 17, 1983, when he was transferred to the Kayenta, Ariz., Service unit. He was employed there until he retired on Nov. 30, 1990. He had spent a total of 36 years and 6 months in military and U.S. Government work.

On Aug. 1, 1991, Pat moved to Gettysburg to enjoy hunting and fishing on the Oahe Reservoir.
He leaves his children, DeeAnn and husband Wade Lawrence of Eagle Butte, Clayton Kennedy and wife Shiela of Dupree, Colin Kennedy of Pocatello, Idaho, and Sioux Marie and husband Mark Red Bear of Swiftbird; one sister, Deloris Bembenic of Jordan, Minn.; one brother, Rapheal Kennedy of Wakonda, S.D.; 15 grandchildren, Jessica, Jenney, Lindee, Morgan, Kaydee, Richi, Tyler, Douglas, Thomas, Clay Jr., Andrew, Blayne, Christine, Bradley and Patrick Scott; and a special great-granddaughter, Julie Ann-Marie.

Pat was preceded in death by his mother in 1955, his father in 1975, brother Rodney in 1992, sisters Patricia in 1993 and Claire in 1995, and his granddaughter Whitney Sioux in 1991.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial for Pat was celebrated Thursday, Aug. 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg with Fr. Mark Axtmann as celebrant. Organist was Judy Robbennolt.
Casketbearers were Wade Lawrence, Mark Red Bear Sr., Clement White Dog Jr., Anthony Kennedy, Michael Kennedy and Daniel Kennedy. Honorary bearers were all his friends in Eagle Butte and Gettysburg. Ushers were Tyler Laplante and Clayton Kennedy.

Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge.
A Scriptural wake service was held Wednesday evening at the All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte.
