Lee A. Snyder
Lee Alfred Snyder, age 88, of Ferrysburg passed away Thursday, January 28, 2016, at Sanctuary at the Shore. He was born April 3, 1927, in Allendale Township, to Forrest W. and Mable (McMillan) Snyder, and he married Frances Oberloh on October 27, 1950, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grand Haven.
Lee served his country in the Navy during WWII as a Store Keeper Third Class on the USS Skagit and USS LSMR 403, was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28.
He worked as a purchasing agent for various plastics companies for many years and retired from Motor City Plastic in Dundee, MI. Lee and his family lived in Milan, MI for 32 years, where they were very active in the community and where all of their children graduated from high school.
He served as the President of the Jaycees in 1957, and was instrumental when the merchant flag service was put into operation for the first time for Memorial Day in 1957. Lee was a very strong Christian, he had unquestioning faith and believed in the grace of God, and served as a Sunday school teacher for 25 years.
He loved deer hunting with his lifelong friend Dick Garthwaite on Beaver Island, and also enjoyed playing his guitar, singing, and playing his harmonica in the Grand Haven minstrel shows during the 50's.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Frances Snyder of Ferrysburg; daughter, Julia Snyder of Spring Lake; three sons: Lee A. Snyder, Jr. of Spring Lake, David Snyder of Milan, John (Rebecca) Snyder of Farmington Hills; son-in-law, Richard Kupferschmidt of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren: Carl Kupferschmidt, Erich Kupferschmidt, Ashley Eveleth, Rachel Eveleth, and Sadie Jane Snyder; his brother, Claude Snyder; and several nieces.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vicki Kupferschmidt, two brothers, Forrest and infant brother James; and his nephew, Forrest Snyder III.
The funeral service for Lee will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, February 1, 2016, at St. John's Lutheran Church (527 Taylor Ave. Grand Haven, MI 49417) with Rev. Michael Goers officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 Honor Guard.
Friends may meet the family from 2-4 PM on Sunday, January 31, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Memorial contributions to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer's Association are appreciated.
