Thomas Marvin Johnson, Sr. passed from this life Thursday, June 30, 2016, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Dutton Funeral Home of Iowa Park is in charge of funeral arrangements. Visitation and Viewing will be Sunday, July 3rd from 2 — 4 p.m. at Dutton Funeral Home. Graveside Services for family and close friends will be held Tuesday, July 5 at 9:30 a.m. at Highland Cemetery with a Celebration of Life Service following at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Iowa Park. Pastor Glen Pearce will officiate.
Thomas was born February 4, 1933, to J C (Tom) and Nora Johnson in Valley View, Texas. A 1953 graduate of Iowa Park High School, Thomas served for two years in the Navy as an electrician on the USS Skagit. Subsequently, he graduated from Midwestern State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting in 1959.
Thomas and Jean Sargent married March 29, 1956 at First Baptist Church in Iowa Park. After living in Wichita Falls for 17 years, they returned to their hometown of Iowa Park where they have resided since 1970. Three children were born to their union: Kathryn Jean Payne of Lubbock, Thomas Marvin Johnson, Jr. (deceased), and Frank Douglas Johnson of Holliday. Thomas and Jean recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
While a student at Midwestern, Thomas worked for Texas Electric as a dispatcher. After graduation, he worked from 1959 to 1973 in the public accounting field. He left Allred, Armstrong and Blancett (CPA's) in 1973 to become Vice President and Controller of Wichita Falls Savings, which was later renamed Mercury Saving Association. In 1985, he was named CEO of Mercury Savings. Thomas was President of the North Texas Chapter of Financial Managers Society for Financial Institutions, Inc. in 1979-1980. Additionally, Thomas was President and Managing Officer of Southside Savings Association in Austin, Texas. Thomas became owner/broker of Texoma Realty and served as President of the Wichita Association of Realtors in 2002. He retired in 2008.
Thomas and Jean are long time members of First Baptist Church of Iowa Park. Thomas enjoyed working with kids and was a Scout Master of Troop 38 Boy Scouts of America and was so proud of all the boys, especially the Eagle Scouts. Thomas was a member of various community organizations and committees including Lifetime Member of the Masonic Lodge No. 713; member of the Iowa Park Economic Development Corp. 4A Board; the Rotary Club of Iowa Park (President 1998-1999) and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Thomas worked on fundraising in support of the Rathgeber House.
Thomas was preceded in death by their son Thomas Marvin Johnson, Jr. and their granddaughter Jeana Shay Jones. Thomas was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Virgil, Allen, and Edgar Johnson. Survivors are his wife Jean; daughter Kathryn Payne and husband Brad of Lubbock and their son Michael and wife Meagan Payne of Amarillo, and their younger son Mason Payne of Lubbock; son Frank Johnson and wife Tammy of Holliday and their sons Justin Johnson of Lubbock, Jake Johnson of College Station and Jett and Jaxx Johnson of Holliday; and daughter-in-law Dr. Michele Reynolds Johnson and daughter Rachel Johnson, both from McKinney. He is also survived by his sisters Alene Onstead (husband Jack) of Iowa Park and Charlene Pruett of Cache, Oklahoma.
